A Benefit for R.E.A.C.H. OUT!

Lt. Governor Tsutsui's After-School Initiative Receives More than $50K in Donations

November 10, 2013

HONOLULU --  Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui’s after-school initiative, R.E.A.C.H., received more than $50,000 from the Honolulu Professionals Foundation (HPF) as a result of a fundraiser held in June. More than one thousand people attended the benefit, which included entertainment from top local acts, such as Anuhea, Weldon Kekauoha, Manoa DNA and Hoaikane, just to name a few. Attendees enjoyed food by notable local chefs and restaurants, such as Alan Wong’s, Murphy’s Bar and Grill, Centerplate, Hanapaa Sushi Company, Hukilau, JJ Bistro, Tiki’s and more.

“The Honolulu Professionals Foundation’s donation will go a long way in improving and enhancing many young lives,” said Tsutsui. “I am grateful for HPF’s interest in R.E.A.C.H and for their dedication to helping the community.”

R.E.A.C.H, which is an acronym for Resources for Enrichment, Athletics, Culture and Health, will provide a comprehensive structure for intermediate and middle school after-school programs. In the coming weeks, Lt. Gov.Tsutsui is expected to announce which schools will be part of the initiative’s pilot project, which is expected to begin in January. The pilot project will enhance existing after-school programs at several intermediate and middle schools statewide.

“Our organization believes in the positive outcomes that the Lt. Governor’s initiative will provide for intermediate and middle school students, and the benefit was our way of making a difference in children’s lives,” said Ross Shinyama, president of the Honolulu Professionals Foundation.

Studies show that effective after-school programs provide not only an educational benefit to students, but a social value to the community.

Another benefit for R.E.A.C.H. is being planned for June 28, 2014, at the Pagoda Restaurant. For more information about R.E.A.C.H., visit www.reachouthawaii.org.

Honolulu Professionals Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is a group of growing professionals dedicated to building a lasting positive legacy in the community through strategic partnerships and giving. For more information about HPF, visit www.honoluluprofessionals.org.
